Coastal Bend continues recovery, NASCC supports

, Local News
The on-going recovery efforts through out the Coastal Bend have just begun.
NASCC is playing a direct supporting role in
that mission with providing a staging ground
for FEMA and other federal entities working
to help our neighboring friends and families
at Cabaniss Navy Outlying Field.
Cabaniss NOLF is an outlying airfield
that belongs to the U.S. Navy, resting near
the western area of Corpus Christi. It is used
for “touch and go” training for student pilots
assigned to NASCC.
Federal Emergency Management Agency
is using an area on the airfield as a base camp
for nearly 1,000 federal responders working
to assist South Texans through Hurricane
Harvey recovery operations.
The base camp began set-up on Septem
ber 3 and is now fully functional with living
quarter and a dining facility.
According to FEMA officials, Hurricane
Harvey was the largest Category 4 storm to
hit the Texas coast since 1961 and this is not
a “run of the mill” event.
“This event is larger than any event to
ever hit Texas. It’s larger than (Hurricane)
Sandy, it’s a big operation, but we’ve got
this,” Kevin Hannes, FEMA federal coordi
nating officer said recently.
Hannes was on the ground touring Camp
Cabaniss Sep. 13-14 and noted how difficult
the road ahead is but pointed out what needs
to happen to make recovery for South Texans
the best that it can be.
“Our programs need to fit the people of
the Coastal Bend’s needs,” he said. “The
efforts here need to be unified among federal
and local agencies because recovery is a
community effort. We will be here until this
recovery is complete. No one has to worry
